A Deep Learning Approach to Assist Sustainability of Demersal Trawling Operations

چکیده
Bycatch in demersal trawl fisheries challenges their sustainability despite the implementation of various gear technical regulations. A step towards extended control over catch process can be established through a real-time monitoring tool that will allow fishers to react unwanted compositions. In this study, for first time commercial fishery sector, we introduce an automated description leverages state-of-the-art region based convolutional neural network (Mask R-CNN) architecture and builds upon in-trawl novel image acquisition system. The system is optimized applications Nephrops enables classification count items during fishing operation. detector robustness was improved with augmentation techniques applied training on custom high-resolution dataset obtained extensive trawling. resulting algorithms were tested video footage representing both normal towing haul-back conditions. algorithm F-score 0.79. compared manual showing low absolute error towing. Current practices are carried out without any indications composition nor whether enters gear. Hence, proposed solution provides substantial contribution making type more targeted, paving way further optimization activities aiming at increasing target while reducing bycatch.

The life spans of demersal species of fishes occurring in deep-waters are much longer and their potential growth rates much lower than those of related shallow water species. As a result, deep-sea demersal fish species are more vulnerable to exploitation. This is because low growth rates relative to the available market discount rate for capital makes it desirable for fishing firms to mine, rat...
متن کاملCalls to curb deep-ocean trawling
Scientists have called for subsidies paid out to a handful of national deep-sea fishing fleets to be stopped immediately in yet another plea to prevent permanent ecological damage and the extinction of some of the longest living creatures on the planet. Without the $150 million of subsidies paid annually, deep-sea fisheries would operate at a loss of $50 million, researchers believe. But the te...
متن کاملa frame semantic approach to the study of translating cultural scripts in salingers franny and zooey
the frame semantic theory is a nascent approach in the area of translation studies which goes beyond the linguistic barriers and helps us to incorporate cognitive and cultural factors to the study of translation. based on rojos analytical model (2002b), which centered in the frames or knowledge structures activated in the text, the present research explores the various translation problems that...
